Time: Wednesday, 16 October, 10:00-12:00h.
Title: Counterfactuals and imagery-based beliefs about possibility

Abstract: There are clearly significant limits on what we can imagine merely by means of sensory imagery. But imaginings that just use sensory imagery are the ones that seem to provide the most forceful evidence for possibility. To what extent can we use reasoning to base more sophisticated beliefs about possibility upon the resources initially supplied by imagery-based imaginings? The talk will identify an apparently powerful but simple form of inference that promises to lead us from imagery-based beliefs to more sophisticated ones, a form of reasoning whose power depends upon the potential parts that contingently true counterfactuals play within it. The talk will also explore some issues arising from the importance of contingent background conditions to the truth of the relevant counterfactuals.
