Title: Surprise in Probabilistic Dynamic Epistemic Logic
Date and Time: October 4, 2012, 15:30–17:30
Venue: Science Park, Room G0.05

Abstract:

The aim of this talk is to present a new formal-logical model of surprise. After reviewing the literature on surprise in psychology, computer science (multi-agent systems) and logic, I will argue that all existing formal models fail to capture the essential dynamic nature of surprise. I will then present a new system, based on probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic, which is capable of expressing surprise dynamics. I will discuss some interesting technical features of this system, and show that it is able to express various empirical properties of surprise (e.g. its transitory nature and its role in belief revision).
